In May/June 2005 Roland went to Havana, Cuba, to rehearse and record his latest orchestral work "Crossing the Border" with an ensemble of classical musicians from the Orquestra Sinfonica Nacional and popular and jazz musicians. Here are four samples from two of the four movements. The whole experience has been filmed and we are currently seeking funding to complete the post-production of a documentary. A 12 minutes trailer has been completed. |

songs from the cage |
||
Hertfordshire Chorus & Blue Planet Orchestra |
No. 1 "prelude" No. 3 "roll the dice" The ecstasy of a life without boundaries - I use a South African marabi rhythm. No. 4 "full moon" is based on the Cuban cha-cha-cha. Bukowski feels his late night loneliness more keenly through accidentally spying on two lovers loving. Piano improvisation features.
|
No. 5 "my garden" Alto sax improvisation featuring Gilad Atzmon; subconcious spirituality : “pain is a flower”. No. 6 "on the train to Del Mar" Expressed through the Brazilian samba and partido alto, the poet on a train, in bad condition, basks in a quiet elation despite everything. A stupid optimism I guess. Featuring the wah-wah trombone of Paul Taylor. No. 7 "Mongolian coasts shining in light" Escaping the cage that is the human condition. Improvisations from our two trumpet players Kevin Robinson and Andy Gathercole. |
| Roland Perrin's setting of songs from the cage was commissioned by Hertfordshire Chorus, and premièred by them with The Blue Planet Orchestra in St Albans, April 2002. | Bukowski's words used with permission from Harper Collins New York. | |
